Petr Brandejs Band (CZ) Bound To Ride
(Bluegrass Europe No. 4 / October - November 1998)
This is another great CD from the Czech Republic, fifteen well chosen songs and instrumentals by Petr Vacek, Odis Elder, Bill Monroe, Ivo Drbohlav, Charlie Monroe and also two band members, Zdenek Roh and Petr Brandejs himself. The songs are interpreted by gifted and talented musicians playing solidly timed - thanks to naturally blond (!) bass player Svata Stepankova - with great vocals and harmony vocals (Honza, Zdenek and Svata) varying between traditional bluegrass, country and swing. "Hopsa Hejsa", a banjo tune composed and played by Petr Brandejs himself, gives an example for the excellent picking of also Honza Maca (mand) and Zdeněk Roh (git) and the great fiddling straight from the heart from Pepa Malina. The last tune is a very originally recorded "Nobody Loves Me" (Z. Clements) with a special technical effect put on the recording that makes it sound like a very old record of the thirties and forties. Make sure you get a copy of this CD or hear the band life when they get near to you.
